Teacher education plays an important role for the qualitative and quantitative improvement in school education. It has been observed that majority of teachers are not able to perform their roles and functions effectively. Somehow, they have developed the perception that their only role is to teach the prescribed syllabus and textbooks. Even in the limited role, aim of teaching is to stuff children's mind with bits of information rather than development of higher order mental abilities like critical thinking, creative thinking, and independent thinking. However, they are also expected to develop syllabi, write instructional materials, provide guidance to students and evaluate their performance. For this they requires training and practice to perform their varied roles and discharge functions and responsibilities effectively and the only time and place where teacher can develop in himself / herself such capabilities and attitudes in his pre-service teacher training institution.
